A New York manicure in London – part 1

This week’s challenge comes from Petunia, who asks us to “Find me a cheap (NY cheap) manicure in central London, please!”

Fair enough – I would love to solve this challenge! The low-cost, high-gloss New York manicure has got to be one of my top 25 favourite things about New York. Finding one in London would be an OolaMoola coup!

May the best-dressed man win – part 2

Here I am, back for instalment two of my manly clothing challenge. Today I’m going to look at a few trends to embrace – and a few faux-pas to avoid – before flagging up my first menswear shopping destination.

Pockets everywhere -- a top trend for Autumn/Winter
The not-so-fine line between fashion and faux-pas
I think it’s fair to say that some men tend to be a little more wary of fashion than they need to be.

May the best-dressed man win – part 1

Hot on the heels of our recent (and so successful!) Mulberry handbag challenge, we’ve received another fashion test, this one from an OolaMoola reader named Roberto.
Roberto has asked us to “find a top class and top condition man bag from Mulberry… and a classic Mac… or anything male-centric”.

The Mac -- perfect for Autumn
From fashion week to the high street, men’s fashion tends to take a backseat to women’s fashion. This challenge provides me with an opportunity to try to redress that balance, or at least offer a little hope to the menfolk out there who are still wearing last, last, last season’s tired threads.

The Mulberry handbag challenge – job done!

I am pleased to report that the Mulberry handbag challenge is now complete, thanks to a clever little shop called Seconda Mano.

Seconda Mano -- this way for bargains
This past weekend I ambled up to Seconda Mano (no website, but I’m told one is on the way) in Islington to investigate an oft-told tale that until now I had disregarded as the stuff of urban myth.

The Mulberry handbag challenge – part 2

Week two of the handbag hunt and alas I’m no closer…

This is a tricky challenge, finding a Mulberry handbag for £100
This week I looked online and did some research into offline shopping. Specifically, I looked into the places I think we’re most likely to hit paydirt: charity shops.

The Mulberry handbag challenge – part 1

Mulberry bags are renowned for their quality and distinctly British style. Mulberry is a designer brand with a designer price tag… and now a reader named Kate has challenged us to find her a large Mulberry handbag for under £100.

Eek! This could be a tricky one! In fact, it might be downright impossible, but hopefully that’s not the case. We’re so determined to deliver on Kate’s challenge that the three of us – StylishMoola, CannyMoola and yours truly – are taking it upon ourselves to turn London upside down until we find that handbag… or something even better, of course.

East London eyebrows

Several weeks ago I mentioned I was at work on a beauty challenge: find an East London locale for budget eyebrow threading. After several false starts – salons moving, services changing, and then my own blind panic, what with being a threading virgin and not really loving pain – I finally made good on my promise… and what’s more, it didn’t even hurt that much!
Adah, our reader, challenged me thusly: “I am looking for cheap eyebrow threading. I currently pay £17 but have paid £3 in the past but need somewhere near Greenwich or on the DLR route between Canary Wharf and Bank. Any recommendations?”

Notes on new challenges

Winging their way over via email and bat-phone… two new challenges from OolaMoola readers:
“I am looking for cheap eyebrow threading. I currently pay £17 but have paid £3 in the past but need somewhere near Greenwich or on the DLR route between Canary Wharf and Bank. Any recommendations?” — Adah
“Can you design and make a unique headpiece — ie fascinator or hat — for a special occasion like a wedding or day at the races… on a budget.” — Rachelle
Fear not fair readers, I am on the case!
And looking back to my first post, I heard requests for recipes (sushi so far, and more to come this week), shopping tips, travel tips (Whitstable in June, and more to come in July) and a budget spa break…
Any more for any more?
