Sometimes you just need a treat

It’s been a long week over here chez Sassy – a good week, but a distinctly exhausting week. For this reason, I had one thing on my mind come Friday afternoon: cake.

Maison Bertaux in Soho

To celebrate the beginnings of good things, the ends of bad things and the general Friday-ness of it all, I took a similarly exhausted and in-need-of-sugarspun-love friend to my favourite patisserie in all of London – Maison Bertaux.

Maison Bertaux is one of the most wonderful places I know. It’s a gorgeous little patisserie in the very heart of Soho and it’s filled with friendly people and truly spectacular desserts. What’s more, instead of the standard faux-bistro interior decorating scheme in place at most chain patisseries, at quirky, homespun Maison Bertaux it’s always party time.

Everything is delicious – I speak from personal experience here – and no matter what your troubles, they will be that little bit less daunting after an éclair, tart, mille-feuille or slice of cake and a huge pot of tea. It’s just basic science, kids.

My friend and I ordered Earl Grey tea, a slice of cheesecake (me) and a blackberry, raspberry and custard tart (her). We then sat outside, chatted with the other customers, patted the odd dog, and tucked in. Heavenly. Maison Bertaux gets it perfect every time.

Our desserts were £4.50 and £4.00 each – can you believe it? Perfect happiness for under a fiver! – and we paid £5.60 for two pots of tea. All in, that’s £14.10. I’m not going to put a ‘saved’ figure in here as I can’t really put a price on happiness, but I can confidently say that was £14.10 very well spent indeed.

Long day? Get thee to Maison Bertaux.
