Gorgeous lunch for a fiver: Japan Centre

I had long heard great things about the Japan Centre (quality ingredients! low prices! amazing selection!) but I’d never got myself down to Piccadilly on a lunchtime to check it out. That all changed yesterday, when I finally got to know my new favourite sushi place – and for well under a fiver.
The Japan Centre is an emporium of all things food-related and Japanese. It’s got a well-stocked grocery section for the kind of stuff you’d take home to prepare (dried noodles, sauces, meat, etc) and, the main attraction, a large deli-style section where you can find just about any kind of sushi, snack or entree.
I chose two packets of freshly-made sushi – a tuna/avocado roll (£2.70) and a tempura pumpkin roll (£1.50) – and, as my order came to more than £4, I got a free miso soup for my troubles. Yes, that’s right: this is the last eating establishment in London with a get-something-free threshold set to below £5.

And the verdict? Delicious. Really, really fresh ingredients, chunky, sizeable portions, and sushi combinations to boggle the mind and/or nudge a less determined OolaMoola’s budget well past the five pound mark.
Still not convinced? Consider this: you can have sushi made with white or brown rice; the take-away packages are all made from recycled material; the Japan Centre delivers grocery orders to your door… and the man who served me had me laughing all the way back to Soho. Not bad, Japan Centre, not bad! Save me a tuna roll… I’ll be back.

Save the tuna! Don’t eat it.
Love the Japan Centre but never taken the leap from the restaurant to deli, think I will now though. Warm Sa’aki for elevenses anybody?
Looks so tasty, really want to go! But I’ve got 4.15 left of my lunch challenge budget this week…. can’t loose my challenge with only £0.05, can I?
:)
Loving that last photo with receipt and proof! Talk about good deal. Keep the good posts coming!
Update: yesterday’s lunch was so good, I had it again today… only I asked someone else to fetch it for me (she was going anyway) so as to avoid looking like a lunchstalker and getting the ‘poor thing, you always eat the same lunch’ pity face from staff and/or fellow diners!
Thanks for the recommendation Sassy! I ventured down to the Japan Centre to grab some lunch yesterday and can confirm it was delicious - I will definitely be going back. Arigatou gozaimasu :)
Totally agree Sassy! Love the Japan Centre. They have some amazing teas too - the Dragonball Jasmine tea is my favourite!
